By the mid-1980s, Ferrari faced a challenge it had never encountered before. Porsche had built the 959, and the world's press declared it the most advanced car ever made. Enzo Ferrari, then in his late eighties, wanted an answer. What he asked for was not a technological showcase but something far simpler and far more brutal: the fastest, purest road car Maranello could build. Furthermore, the engineers delivered exactly that. Composite bodywork, a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8 producing 478 hp, and a complete absence of driver aids. Moreover, the F40 became the first production car to break 200 mph. Enzo died the following year, making this the last Ferrari he personally signed off.
