The Model

The Ferrari 288 GTO

The Ferrari 288 GTO was built to race, yet it never turned a wheel in competition. Ferrari conceived it in 1984 to homologate a car for Group B, the most extreme category of the decade, and revived the GTO name for the first time since the 250 GTO. Furthermore, the engineers turned the V8 longitudinally, added twin IHI turbochargers, and clothed the chassis in composite panels developed from Formula 1 practice. The result produced 400 CV and comfortably exceeded 300 km/h. Moreover, when Group B was cancelled the car lost its racing purpose, but it found its legacy: the Evoluzione prototypes that followed led directly to the F40. Only 272 examples were built. As a result, a Ferrari 288 GTO for sale remains a rare occasion, and the car is widely regarded as the first of Maranello's modern supercars.

This Example

About this example

This 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, offered for private sale, is presented in Rosso Corsa over a black interior, the definitive specification for the model. It has covered 25,000 km from new. Furthermore, Ferrari Classiche certification is in place, confirming the authenticity of its chassis, engine and major components. As a result, this example offers the rare combination of correct specification, documented authenticity and moderate use, in one of only 272 cars built.

In Detail

Inside, the black cabin of this Ferrari 288 GTO is purposeful rather than lavish, with a low driving position, clear instrumentation and a gated shifter that leaves no doubt about the car's intentions. Behind the occupants sits a 2,855 cc V8, mounted longitudinally to make room for the twin IHI turbochargers and their intercoolers. Furthermore, with Weber-Marelli injection it produces 400 CV at 7,000 rpm, delivered through a five-speed manual gearbox. Moreover, the car reaches 100 km/h in under five seconds, figures that placed it at the very top of its era. As a result, the 288 GTO delivers an analogue, mechanical experience that later turbocharged Ferraris would refine but never quite replace.
